I was like a kid in a candy store when I saw the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D and other amazing Star Trek awesomeness at the Henry Ford in Detroit earlier this year. But I wasn’t expecting to see that ship’s legendary predecessor last weekend in Washington D.C.!
As you can see, the original filming model of the NCC-1701 is proudly displayed in the National Air and Space Museum. To the delight of Star Trek fans, it lights up just as it did on the 1960s TV series three times a day. I was lucky enough to arrive two minutes before it happened!

Would have liked to see it completely lit up in a darker setting to really get the full effect! A few years ago at a comic con in Portland, there was a model of the Enterprise all lit up about 4 get long and would have bought it except they wanted an arm and a leg for it (around $4,000)!
Agreed! It was in the main entrance hall, which had so much light coming in from all over. I would have loved for it to have been in a quiet dark corner somewhere! That would have been spectacular. The Star Trek exhibit at the Henry Ford had a much better lighting setup. Not sure if you saw my post on that or not. I still can’t believe I got to see NCC-1701 AND NCC-1701-D in person in the same Summer!

Damn! Wish I had that kinda cash laying around for just such an occation, but my wife would probably make me paint it pink or something, so I suppose we’re all better off! 🙂
